Cat litter - Dr. Elsey Cat Attract / Precious Cat Litter

When choosing which brand of litter to buy, the key factor you should consider is whether the "urine clump" breaks apart during pick-up.

Since we adopted our cat a year ago, we have tried different brands of cat litter. The brand of litter with the best "clumping" action is Dr. Elsey. The Dr. Elsey brand offers two main products:

1. Cat Attract Litter

2. Precious Cat Classic

Cat Attract Litter is the premium cat litter that is supposed to lure unwilling cats to the litter box. We received two free packages (20 lbs each) at the CFA cat show. Since our cat has no problem using the litter box, it wasn't possible to test whether the "cat attract" component works. Regardless, the "clumping" ability of the litter is amazing. However, the Cat Attract Litter is really expensive - $12.49 for 20 lbs at Petsmart.

Precious Cat Classic is the cheaper alternative that does not include the "cat attract" component. If you don't need to litter-train your cat, this is a very good litter. The "clumping" ability of the litter is as good as the Cat Attract Litter. The price is also much better: $5.49 for 18 lbs at Pet Club; when it is on sale there, we have seen it as cheap as $3.99 or $2.99 for 18 lbs.

If you think the Precious Cat Classic is still too expensive, you can mix it half and half with a cheaper litter, which is what we do. We mix the Precious Cat Classic with Tidy Cats. Tidy Cats is a little cheaper but it does not "clump" the urine well at all - the clump breaks apart when we scoop it up. Mixing Tidy Cats with Precious Cat Classic does the trick - cheaper litter cost with strong "clumping" action.

Because the urine clump does not break apart during pick-up, the litter box stays very clean and we never need to dump the whole box's litter just to keep it clean. Taking this in account, buying the Precious Cat Litter is a better bargain than the "cheaper" litter.
