AAA車會的其他福利包括免費拖車和保險折扣。假如你的車匙鎖了在車內﹐亦可以用AAA找拖車公司來開門(免費)--假如你找開鎖公司的話﹐可能要US$100或以上。我很清楚因為我有位朋友曾經把車匙鎖在車內--他當時未有入AAA又沒有找我﹐結果找開鎖公司﹐付了US$100--比AAA一年的年費還要貴。此外﹐AAA提供簡單的DMV服務﹐包括繳交每年的牌費(registration)--這服務可節省你很多時間--而且我本人覺得DMV的員工又慢又沒有禮貌。

你們可到AAA網站瀏覽有關資料。

小貼士﹕基本會員每年可以call拖車四次--不限你本人﹐所以你可以幫親戚,朋友,鄰居找拖車。故此﹐我覺得一家人只要有一個人入會便可以﹐不用每個人都入會。

Museums and Parks in Hong Kong

Hong Kong's Leisure and Cultural Services Department operates many museums, in five main categories: Cultural Services, Antiquities and Monuments Office, Art Promotion Office, Central Conservation Section, and other museums.

When we went to Hong Kong, we visited four museums: Hong Kong Science Museum, Hong Kong Museum of History, Hong Kong Space Museum, Hong Kong Museum of Coastal Defence.

- Hong Kong Science Museum: Many hands-on models on science, health, technology. However, some models are closed due to technical problems and others are old and obsolete.

- Hong Kong Museum of History: When we visited, there were two special exhibitions - The Development of Banks in Shanghai and Hong Kong; SUPERTRADER Hong Kong: 40 Years of Trade. This museum has to be the best designed and organized museums we visited. There are historical artifacts that we have never seen or imagined even existed, including this: Have you ever wondered how many grains of rice could be bought with $6 billion in China in 1949? We highly recommend the Hong Kong Museum of History.
Answer: 70 grains of rice
- Hong Kong Space Museum: The most famous attraction is the Omnimax Show / Sky Show, which is priced according to the seat location. If you want Stall tickets (back of the theater), which offer the best view, purchase the ticket early. A separate ticket is required to view the exhibitions, which are fairly obsolete and not well-maintained. Also, the lighting is ill-designed - some are too bright and some are too dark, making information, photographs, and videos difficult to see. We would not recommend this museum, especially if you are tight on time.

- Hong Kong Museum of Coastal Defence: Situated in Sau Kei Wan, it is about a 15- to 20-minute walk from the Sau Kei Wan MTR station. The museum looks recently renovated and is spotlessly clean, with very friendly staff. When we visited, there was a special exhibition called Cultural Relics of the Eight Banners of the Manchu Exhibition, which was interesting, though not as impressive as the title might suggest. Other places of historic interests include the Kowloon Walled City Park (South Gate) and the Former Yamen Building. Both attractions are located in the same park and are highly recommended.

Finally, Sung Wong Toi, a park also located in Kowloon City, is of historical significance. However, the park is very small, dirty, and with little information. Yet, considering its importance in Chinese history, it is worth talking a quick stroll inside and taking a few pictures with the monument.

香港的博物館-Museums in Hong Kong

有一個很特別的現象, 原居地的市民是不會主動參觀自己地方的博物館. 例如: 在香港居住的人是不會主動前去參觀香港的博物館. 籍此機會, 讓大家知道香港現時共有多少個博物館.

香港康樂及文化事務署轄下的博物館分為五類: 康文署博物館, 古物古蹟辦事處, 藝術推廣辦事處, 文化修復組, 香港其他博物館.

香港的確有很多博物館和古蹟, 希望大家主動前去發掘和善用.

今次遊香港, 參觀了康文署的四間博物館, 包括尖沙咀的科學館, 歷史博物館, 尖東的太空館和海防博物館.
- 科學館, 有很多生活科學的模型和資訊供參觀者邊玩邊學習. 但是, 仍然有部份模型因故障而關閉, 有部份資訊骯髒和陳舊.

- 歷史博物館, 當時有兩個專題展覽: 從錢莊到現代銀行－滬港銀行業發展; 商貿世代 : 香港貿易發展四十年. 我們的觀後感: 場館花了很多金錢時間和人力物力. 另外, 有很多未曾見過和無想像過會存在的展品. 舉例: 在1949年六十億可以買到多少米? 今次一遊令我們大開眼界. "歷史博物館"值得前去參觀.答案: 70餘粒米
- 太空館, 設有一個何鴻燊天象館, 節目票價分為標準票和優惠票, 分前後座. 想買後座的話定必要早購票, 因為前座會睇到頸痛和頭暈. 另外, 展覽廳內的展品大多數很陳舊, 資訊比較落後. 本人覺得燈光需要從新設計, 因為有的太刺眼; 有的又太暗. 展覽廳十年前同十年後無太大變更.

- 海防博物館, 位於筲箕灣, 距離筲箕灣地鐵站約15~20分鐘路程. 那兒裝修較新淨, 管理職員很友善. 當時設有一個專題展覽: 白山黑水的戰士－清代八旗文物展, 有很多專題展品是從不同地方借回來供展覽.還有遊覽古物古蹟辦事處的九龍寨城公園九龍寨城南門遺蹟和九龍寨城公園九龍寨城衙門. 這兩個景點在同一個公園內. 值得一遊.

另外, 宋皇臺公園也是位於九龍城, 宋皇臺公園面積很細, 沒有太多資訊, 地方骯髒, 像一個普通的小小晨運公園, 純粹同塊石頭拍張照留念.

Singapore MRT

Many tour books and tour websites acclaim the Singapore MRT (Mass Rapid Transit) as inexpensive and convenient - one of the best mass transit systems in the world. However, compared to the Hong Kong MTR (Mass Transit Railway), the Singapore MRT is somewhat inferior.

Here are some observations we made during the trip:

- Inside each Hong Kong MTR car, there are maps above each door with indicator lights showing the passengers what the next stop is and which side of the car to alight/exit. Since the Singapore MRT does not offer this kind of map, you have to pay close attention to the PA system.

- The maps found both before and after the gates are not clear enough. For example, when we visited Merlion Park (a famous tourist attraction), we arrived at Raffles Place NS26/EW14 but the local maps at the station did not make it obvious how to walk to Merlion Park. Ultimately, we had to ask several locals along the way and we took so many unnecessary turns. Of course the torturously hot and humid weather in Singapore made the walk even more unbearable. MRT could really do a lot to make it more convenient for tourists.

- The customer service staff apparently did not know much about the local area. One evening, we planned to go to Maxwell Food Center (a common dining destination for both locals and tourists). When we arrived at the Chinatown station (NE4), we asked a customer service staff which station exit to use, friendly as he was, he could not answer us with certainty. Eventually, he gave us an answer but unfortunately, the exit he mentioned was not the most direct and convenient exit. We ended up taking an unnecessarily long route. Again. (Thanks to MRT.)

- We would not consider the MRT staff polite and they certainly did not try to be helpful. On the second day of the trip, we decided to buy the Tourist Pass at the Bugis Station (EW12). We walked up to the counter to ask about the Visitor Card (at that time, we forgot the name of the pass, which is Tourist Pass) and we were told that MRT did not sell Visitor Card anymore. We asked her again and she told us again that MRT did not sell that anymore. After we left the counter, we checked our information guide and found that the pass was now called the Tourist Pass. So, we got in line again and was finally able to buy the Tourist Pass. We wish the MRT staff could have been more helpful and simply told us that the Visitor Card had changed its name to Tourist Pass. We could only expect that many tourists are interested in purchasing the Tourist Pass (after all, it is for tourists, right?) and certainly, not all of them would remember the exact name.

- The Singapore MRT ticketing machines are really slow. Even though we have never used the Hong Kong MTR ticketing machine (who needs ticketing machines when there is Octopus Card), we would expect the Hong Kong machines to be faster. Anyway, the Singapore MRT ticketing machines are really, really, really slow.

Finally, when you buy a single-trip ticket, you have to pay a S$1 deposit in addition to the fare. Once you arrive at the destination, remember to put the ticket back into the ticketing machine to refund the deposit. Although it is a little inconvenient, for the sake of conserving resources and the environment, the slight inconvenience is worth it.

新加坡地鐵 (Singapore MRT)

雖然很多旅遊書和website都大讚新加坡的MRT又平又方便。但與香港地鐵火車相比﹐新加坡較為遜色。

以下是一些我們觀察到的:

- 香港地鐵有些有顯示燈的地鐵地圖來通知乘客下一站是什麼地方。而新加坡MRT車廂沒有﹐要非常留意PA system。

- 新加坡MRT的月台和出閘後的地圖不夠清晰(例如: 到Raffles Place NS26/EW14(魚尾公園那地鐵站)之後﹐MRT區域地圖並沒有直接顯示前往魚尾公園的路線。結果我們問了幾個路人﹐行了很多多餘的路。兜圈子兜到儍﹐加上悶熱的天氣﹐這個景點真不方便遊客前去。
- 新加坡MRT的服務員並不清楚自己該區的地理位置情況。
旅程中﹐我們計劃前去Maxwell Food Center(是一個很多遊客和當地人去的食肆中心)。當我們到了牛車水站(NE4)詢問MRT出閘口的一位行來行去(猜想他的職責是協助乘客)的服務員。他不肯定地告訴我們用某某出口處。結果﹐他說了那個出口並不是最方便和直接的﹐令我們行了很多很長的"冤枉"路。胃液快要消化我們的胃了!

- 新加坡MRT的服務員談不上有禮貌﹐亦不會主動幫助我們(遊客)。
第二天到新加坡決定買旅客卡(Tourist Pass)。去到Bugis站(EW12)的服務窗口詢問職員有沒有Visitor Card購買﹐(因為當時忘記那張卡的專用名詞)。那位服務員告訴我們已經沒有Visitor Card賣。我們再三追問她﹐她仍然是說沒有出售。我們離開服務窗口站在一旁再查看手上的旅遊資料才記得該卡的專名詞是Tourist Pass。於是再排隊﹐到服務窗前買Tourist Pass﹐這次買到了。相信很多旅客都會買Tourist Pass﹐但未必每個旅客都記得該名稱。如果MRT服務員能夠主動幫助乘客﹐那就太好了。

- 新加坡MRT的售票機的速度很慢。雖然沒有用過香港地鐵火車的售票機﹐但新加坡售票機的電腦真是很慢很慢。

另外﹐買單程票要收S$1按金--到目的地後, 記緊把車票放入售票機﹐取回按金。雖然有點麻煩﹐但如果是為了環保﹐少少麻煩也是值得的。

國泰747坐位設計(Cathay Pacific's new economy class seats)--美觀但不舒適

從香港回三藩市坐的國泰747-400﹐所有坐位全新設計--包括頭等﹐商務和經濟--但我們坐經濟﹐所以只對經濟客位有意見。

上機時﹐一看到就有意外的開心。最初以為只有商務客位才有新坐位。直至行到自己位(66H,K)才知道經濟客位也是新設計。最明顯的是在椅背(即我們前面)的新款wide screen螢光幕。遙控器現在放在螢光幕下面﹐不再需要像坐舊款椅時要弄在椅左右的遙控器﹐以前真是弄到手頸和肩膀都痛了。此外TV/Movie的新system有了所有節目的資料﹐不再需要找飛機雜誌才知道哪一台做什麼節目。
可惜的是雖然螢光幕設計好﹐坐位其他的設計就有點問題。其一是沒有了椅後以前用來放離物的網(或袋)。現在的網袋放在自己椅的下面﹐非常不方便﹐而且細小得很。除了飛機本身的雜誌以外﹐什麼都放不到。
第二是沒有是腳踏。習慣了亞洲航空公司的飛機有腳踏﹐現在沒有了﹐覺得欠缺了什麼。

另外﹐椅也是新設計。以前的椅﹐睡覺時椅背放下大約30度﹐影響到後面的乘客﹐所以食餐時要將椅放回原位。新的設計是"正"椅(圖的1)中有張能移動的椅墊(圖的2)--睡覺時椅墊會自動放下和向前動﹐但"正"椅不動﹐影響不到後面的乘客。但那椅墊非常不舒適。而且因為椅墊向前移動了﹐腳和前椅的空間少了--用睡覺的姿勢看電影會坐得很近螢光幕﹐更加不舒適。


如果有選擇﹐當然是有新螢光幕好。但要用比較舒適的舊椅設計做代價﹐如要坐長程機﹐我們寧願要舊款的椅和舊款的螢光幕。

Once we stepped off the plane into Changi Airport, the plush carpet was the first thing we noticed. What soft carpet. What comfort. Wow. The government/airport sure knows how to make a good first impression. Everything in the Changi Airport scream new and clean - elevator, toilets, luggage claim, carts, art, waterfalls, customer service counters, self-help computer systems...

When you arrive at or depart from certain airports, have you ever noticed the candies at the immigration counter? (Of course, this does not apply to US international airports, which try their best to repel and irritate tourists.) Ever noticed the packaging? Chances are, these candies are not sold anywhere else. Very good souvenirs. And free too.What looks like a recently renovated interior - lots of lights, lots of green plants. Most importantly, spotlessly clean.The toilets - nothing short of 5-star-hotel luxury.

相信這記念品在街上是買不到的.....哈~哈~另外, 新加坡機場的裝修蠻新, 光線充足, 環境乾淨.尤其男女水洗手間, 彷彿走進一間高級酒店的洗手間啊~

Singapore Food - Roti Prata

There are many Arab "pancake" stores.Pancakes are in three major categories: Roti Prata, Roti Telur (with eggs), Roti Bawang Telur (with eggs and onions). They usually do not contain other ingredients; to eat the pancakes, dip them directly into curry or sugar.
Other than pancakes, you should try the curry, chicken or mutton, and the tea/coffee. We especially recommend the tea and the coffee - both taste uniquely good.

There were no menu at the restaurant where we ate. The bill was higher than we expected but still reasonable.

在小亞拉伯區有很多印度拉餅舖。印度拉餅大約分為三種: Roti Prata, 加蛋的Roti Telur, 加蛋和洋蔥的Roti Bawang Telur
拉餅通常不加入何餡料, 直接沾咖哩或白糖來吃。除了拉餅, 還有咖哩烤雞或羊肉和咖啡奶茶等。
當時因為無餐牌, 埋單時的價錢比想像中貴, 但合理不過份。

Singapore Food - Chicken Rice

Chicken Rice is a famous local cuisine in Singapore. During our trip, we tried the dish in two budget Chicken Rice stalls.

Boon Tong Kee Pte Ltd Tian Tian Hainanese Chicken RiceComparing the taste and texture of the chicken meat and chicken rice, Tian Tian is better. Also, the Tian Tian portion was larger.

On the other hand, the presentation at Boon Tong Kee is better, with the rice presented as a pyramid; it's chicken was skinless and the hot sauce was very hot. If you need chicken thigh, you have to add S$1; add S$1 for three cubes of fried tofu
